Others

Looking out for number one is the counsel for today.  "If you do not look out for yourself, don't expect anyone else to."  so says the self-appointed experts on relationships.  I must admit, there are times when I have given that advice when there is abuse or addiction, or the other party is threatening bodily harm.  In those situations you must exercise caution and be concerned about your own safety.  But, that is the exception not the rule. Being only concerned about yourself is tearing families apart, and is destroying corporations.  (who can forget Enron?) It is what motivates dictators and creates hostile environments.  Looking out for number one says, "I do not care how my actions affect you."  It says, "my children must understand my interests come before them." Being self-centered is anti-Christian.  It was said of Jesus that His only concern was for people.  He was motivated to leave His place in heaven, come to our world, and to surrender His life on a cross for our salvation.  The writer of Philippians admonishes us to develop that same kind of attitude.  (Philippians 2:1-8)  Imagine how different our world would be if we put into practice being concerned about others above ourselves. Come see us Sunday.
