Precious Treasure

When you see people gathered around a storm drain, and one of them has his head and one arm shoved down inside it, you become a little curious. I asked what all of the excitement was about, and was informed that someone had lost a ring and they were attempting to find it. It was not just any ring, it was the individuals mother’s ring that was lost and that made it more precious, and the urgency to find it even greater.

In reflecting on this event, I was reminded of a parable Jesus taught about a merchant who came upon a pearl of tremendous value. He sold all he had to purchase the pearl. It was too valuable to ignore.

There are some things you cannot put a price on. They are of too great a value. A good marriage, the touch of a child’s trusting hand, laughter, peace of mind and etc. all so precious, they defy price tags. One thing is of far more value than anything you can imagine: God’s rule in your life. That is the pearl of great price that Jesus was speaking of. You cannot buy it, you cannot earn it. You can only surrender to it. When you find it, as they did the ring, you too will rejoice.
