Free or Captive? – by Don Siders

With all the talk and arguments about freedom in this country, there is a LOT people need to stop and think about–particularly in this an election year! Much argument and advertising by the candidates is to persuade us to believe them, have confidence that they will solve our problems and things will be better! History and experience has taught me that this just isn’t so!
In Colossians 2:8 it says, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirit of the world, and not according to Christ.” Paul says captivity occurs when we follow the things of man and NOT Jesus Christ! Re-read the warnings about the thinking and ways of man in Proverbs 16! Then look at Paul’s contrasts and comparisons of the wisdom of man versus that of God! Do YOU see Paul’s point then in Colossians 2?

In John 8:32 we are told we can know the truth and by it be set free! In I Corinthians 6 and 10 Paul says all things are lawful but NOT necessarily beneficial or correct–even when we have the right! Sometimes simply to withhold or curb our “rights” is better than demanding and exercising them regardless of the consequences! That is one way of loving others as ourselves and as Jesus taught us to love! That indeed is freedom and liberty–choosing to follow God regardless of the consequences to self because with God we cannot lose!! That is what Romans 8 is all about!
So ask YOURSELF–am I free or am I a captive to “empty deceit”? Even science at times shows its emptiness in an attempt to hold YOU captive to its demands and thinking. DO NOT be fooled! ALWAYS look to Jesus and seek Him and YOU will be richly rewarded here and later!
